Andrew VVarholla is a stylist, musician, DJ, event expert and social media professional – but most importantly, he is about always staying true to himself. Andrew was born in Offenbach am Main, grew up in the Rhine-Main area and now lives in Berlin. In our interview, he talks about “being VVarholla” and the insights he has gained in this special year. He also shares his thoughts about the role of courage – and the importance and meaning of colours, silhouettes and accessories.

You do so many different things – styling, music, events, social media – which job title would you give yourself?

I would never actually give myself a job title. When asked about my job, I simply say my job is to be myself. It is our calling to find ourselves. I think people define themselves far too often and too quickly with their work. It might sound cheesy, but I’ve been acting according to this motto from the beginning: “Fall in love with what you do and you will never work a day in your life.” Work is a matter of definition. It all started as a hobby for me – and then I was paid for my hobby. Therefore, you could almost call it work, but at the same time it still feels like a hobby. But then, usually, another question follows: How do you make money?

What is your answer to this question?

I make a living with styling and social media management. Still, when I am asked what my job is – it’s being myself, being VVarholla.

How do you incorporate “being VVarholla” into your work in social media or styling actors, artists and musicians for videos, photo shoots and more?

When I develop styling concepts, ideas bubble out of me. Often I have an immediate feeling for what might fit well and I follow up on that. I love looking at new fashion collections and gathering inspiration. I have a little TikTok account for fashion, and constantly immerse myself in this topic – so it feels super easy and natural to me to find the right ideas for clients or projects. It’s the same with social media: I see it as a form of digital styling – basically creating virtual business cards. In corona times, this has become even more important because there are no events. I used to work in event management too, then I had to rethink things a bit.

Did you find that difficult?

It always takes courage to tackle new things and of course, it cost me some effort. However, I don’t dance around on thoughts for too long, but rather ask myself: What could happen if everything works out?

How did you experience this special year?

I could get to know myself better. I re-evaluated what I do, got to know people differently, let people go out of my life. It was a very eventful, insightful year, which pushed me forward mentally. Although the pace of 2020 was relatively slow, I have learned to make decisions more quickly. I have learned that you don’t have to please everybody. And I have learned that everything that happens in my life lies in my own responsibility – from my mood to work projects.

What do you like about Berlin?

Berlin is open, Berlin is creative, Berlin is vibrant, Berlin is unreduced. Berlin is fun, but also dangerous. You have to enjoy Berlin with caution – it’s so easy to get distracted in this city. Even today, in corona times, I could go to four different house parties.

What advice would you give to other people who are also freelancers in the creative industry?

I would advise them not to be shy. Prove courage, don’t give up – for example, don’t be afraid to contact someone you really want to work with multiple times. At some point, you will have so much appeal that people approach you. Until then, you’re the one that has to make sure that new projects happen. That requires stamina – but don’t forget that you only reach the next level if you work for it.

How would you describe your style?

My style is contemporary, fresh, casual-classy. I often wear a blazer, a shirt or a turtleneck, dressed pants or a whole suit. Chelsea boots and a coat or long parka. I think a lot about the silhouettes and colours of my looks. The silhouette determines how others perceive you – and so do colours: someone who predominantly wears black or a combination of black and white is usually perceived as a person with “clear thought”. Because I know about the subconscious effects of colours, I sometimes like to wear orange at meetings with new clients – not as a complete look of course, but as an element of my outfit. Orange is a friendly, warm and accessible colour that signals: “I am your comrade”. Of course, I also apply this knowledge in my styling jobs to transport or enhance moods.

What is the most important thing in your wardrobe?

I read the other day “We only become individuals in the collective”. In my opinion, it’s very similar with clothes. A single piece of clothing can usually not express as much on its own – but it can be quite powerful as a part of a combination. This is the reason why I always use accessories, why I always think in combinations. A pocket square is just a pocket square – but it can change the whole look of a suit. Details matter – they complete every look and transport individuality.
