Sustainability

Closed cares

CLOSED – Sustainability

We are a family business. We always stay true to our roots in traditional craftsmanship – and at the same time, we constantly come up with innovations. Currently we’re working ambitiously on becoming even more sustainable while upholding our high quality standards. Sustainability has always been something we care about. Even before it was a buzzword or a trend. And it always felt so natural to us that we didn’t talk about it all that much. We would like to change that – because such an important topic deserves more awareness. Our new goal is to communicate transparently what we’re doing already and what we’re going to do in the future, in order to produce our collections with less of an environmental impact. To let you know that we care. And to inspire you to become active, too. And it doesn’t stop there. Another thing we take for granted is social responsibility. It’s extremely important to us to be fair. Ever since our beginnings in 1978.

Our key values are part of everything we do. They are the reason we created an eco-friendly denim line, for example.

CLOSED – Sustainability
Let’s talk details.

Step by step,

CLOSED – Our Standards: Sustainability
we’re
taking Closed towards a
greener future.

We are not an eco-label. That doesn’t stop us from continuously finding new ways to improve – because, of course, we care about our planet. Always have, always will. We’re continuously making our processes as sustainable as possible.

Our goal is to produce our collections with less of an environmental impact, while never compromising our high quality. Fortunately, these two values often go hand in hand. By making high quality our priority ever since the beginnings of Closed, a lot of our processes have been clean and green since the early 1980s. A good starting point, but nothing to rest on.

We understand the topic of sustainability holistically – let’s take a closer look!

Step by step,
CLOSED – Our Standards: Sustainability
CLOSED – Our Standards: Sustainability
we’re
taking Closed towards a greener future.

Made in Europe.

88 percent of our products are made in Europe. This not only ensures short distances, we also value that our European production partners are very familiar with the process of manufacturing high-quality clothing and accessories. Furthermore, we appreciate the high social standards in Europe. Our products are not transported by plane, but by land.

Fair Wear Foundation.

Closed has been a member of the Fair Wear Foundation, which promotes fair working conditions in the textile industry, since the beginning of 2021.

Climate-neutral business.

Our headquarters and warehouse in Hamburg have been climate-neutral since 2018. We try to lower our carbon footprint where we can and compensate for emissions that cannot be avoided by supporting climate protection projects. Since autumn/winter 2021, our A BETTER BLUE jeans have been climate-neutral products.

Denim triangle in Italy.

Every pair of Closed jeans is 100 percent made in Italy – from the fabric to the last stitch and with short distances between denim our experts for weaving, sewing and washing. Together with our Italian denim experts, we developed our eco-denim line.

Eco-denim line A BETTER BLUE.

We use eco-friendly materials, gentle dyeing methods and low-impact washing techniques for our A BETTER BLUE line, saving water, chemicals and electricity – to create sustainable denim from start to finish.

Organic materials.

Organic materials have a much lower impact on the environment and are always our preferred choice. Compared to conventional cotton, the cultivation of organic cotton requires around 80 per cent less water, 60 per cent less energy and no chemicals. Most of our jeans and essentials are made of 100 per cent organic cotton. We also use organic linen and organic cashmere.

Recycled materials.

To save resource, we incorporate recycled materials: recycled cotton and recycled elastane are part of A BETTER BLUE. Our insulation material 3M™ Thinsulate™ Recycled Featherless Insulation contains recycled loose-fill fibers. Some of our jackets come with a Thermore® Ecodown® filling, made of 100 per cent recycled PET bottles. We also use recycled polyester, recycled nylon and recycling-cashmere.

Circularity.

Since 2022, we have been using PCR-cotton (post-consumer recycling) for some of our jeans. This way, new garments are created from worn, discarded clothing – an important step towards a more circular economy.

Animal welfare.

Closed has stopped using fur in 2014. We joined the Fur Free Retailer network by the animal organisation Four Paws and signed Four Paws’ Brand Letter of Intent to officially call for a mulesing-free wool industry – and it is our goal to guarantee that our wool or wool mix yarns and fabrics are mulesing-free. We do not use angora or down at all.

No disposal of unsold goods.

We would never throw away or destroy unsold Closed items. Products that didn’t sell at the end of the season get marked down for our sale periods. Remaining items have another chance in our outlets. The next step after the outlets is our bi-annual factory sale. We have been giving items that didn’t sell after these steps to a Chilean charity organisation for many years. The clothes are sold in Chile and the complete proceeds support a music school for children in need.

Innovation

CLOSED – Our Standards: Innovation
Traditional craftsmanship benefits from modern expertise.

Traditional craftsmanship benefits from modern expertise. That is why we push things forward with new technologies for sustainable and advanced production.

Traditional craftsmanship benefits from modern expertise.
Coreva™.
The world’s first completely biodegradable stretch fibre is made from natural rubber – and enables jeans with stretch content to become degradable garments. Conventional stretch yarns, on the other hand, usually take many years to decompose and can leave behind residues or microplastics. Coreva™ was developed by our denim weaver Candiani, which is very committed to sustainable innovation.

ONIBEGIE.
We use an innovative outer wear fabric made of recycled nylon. It is dyed with a sustainable dye containing plant pigments. Developed by our Japanese partners Komatsu Matere, ONIBEGIE is an eco-friendly dyeing technique that upcycles onion skins, olives and bamboo.

Thinsulate™ Recycled Featherless by 3M™.
Instead of down, we have been using the innovative substitute Thinsulate™ Featherless by 3M™ (Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing), a leading producer in their field of technology based in St. Paul, Minnesota, in the USA. We were one of the first German companies to process the synthetic, animal-friendly material as insulating padding for our jackets and coats. Since Autumn/Winter 2019, we have been using 3M™ Thinsulate Recycled Featherless Insulation. It’s made with 100 per cent recycled loose-fill fibers.

A Better Blue

CLOSED – Our Story
% less water

% less energy
% less chemicals

A BETTER BLUE is our eco-friendly denim line. We developed A BETTER BLUE in 2018 together with our long-standing denim partners in Italy. The production of A BETTER BLUE jeans saves considerable amounts of water, chemicals and electricity.

Our A BETTER BLUE jeans are made in Italy using sustainable materials, eco-friendly dying methods and gentle washing techniques – for sustainable jeans from start to finish, without ever compromising our signature style and high quality.

Sustainable materials.
Our weaving mill Candiani in Robecchetto near Milan uses 40 per cent cotton from sustainably managed plantations for all A BETTER BLUE denims and develops innovative, environmentally friendly materials. By the way: Candiani’s company headquarters is located in an environmental protection area – the company is considered the “greenest weaving mill” in Europe.

Sustainable dyeing methods.
Candiani spins yarns from sustainable materials, which are then dyed – always blue or black – for denim. When dyeing for the A BETTER BLUE line, Candiani also relies on environmentally friendly innovations that save water and chemicals

Sustainable washing techniques.
Along with Candiani, the laundry company Everest from the Italian town of Piombino Dese was also significantly involved in the development of our eco-denim line A BETTER BLUE. Everest is an innovative company that has its own water treatment plant and is constantly developing new environmentally friendly washing processes without chemicals – many of which even do without water completely.

Social Responsibility

CLOSED – Our Standards: Responsibility

At Closed we are loyal. Many of our manufacturing partners have been with us for decades, and we see them as part of the family. These relationships are built on trust and form the basis for everything we do. For us, sustainability also means creating the same conditions for all workers. Today and tomorrow.

Fair Wear Foundation

As a member of the Fair Wear Foundation, the working conditions in our partners’ production sites are independently audited on a regular basis. Furthermore, through our membership we commit to the Fair Wear complaint system as well as transparent reporting. We react immediately to the results of all audits and incorporate them into the individual assessment of each production partner in order to be able to draw appropriate conclusions for further cooperation. This involvement and transparency are crucial for us to be able to positively influence the working conditions in the production sites in the long term.

We stand up for the Code of Labour Practices of the foundation. Our production partners have also signed these eight labour guidelines and informed their workers about them:

  • Employment is freely chosen
  • No discrimination in employment
  • No exploitation of child labour
  • Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining
  • Payment of a living wage
  • No excessive working hours
  • Safe and healthy working conditions
  • Legally binding employment relationship

Code of Conduct

Our managers, designers and apparel engineers regularly visit our production sites and are in constant dialogue with our suppliers. These long-standing partnerships have resulted in a Code of Conduct for ecological and social guidelines – one based on mutual trust and followed as a matter of course. It is signed bi-annually by all our partners:
